Social Networking for Photographers

Social Networking is big business. As a photographer you can take advantage of these new sites to promote your work, to get people to visit your website and to make new contacts that work in the same industry. Don’t be intimidated if you have never tried social media before – many of the big companies are free to join and you can close your account down if you are unhappy with the results.

Whenever you are using social media, remember to be polite and keep personal things personal – also be careful what you show about yourself. If you want to keep your name personal for example or your location you can adjust your privacy settings.

Here are a few websites for you to investigate.

1. Facebook

On Facebook you can add a profile for yourself but also for your photography. Here, people can become your ‘fans’ and you can promote your own website through Facebook. Keep the profile you have for our photography very professional if you can so that you can attract other people who are just interested in your photography.

2. Twitter

Twitter is quite a new site where you can Micro-blog. You set up a free account and you can follow people who specifically work in photography. You become their ‘follower’and in turn, they can follow you back. Here you can do things like have conversations with other photographers around the world, you can ask each other questions and you can promote your work.

3. My Space

My Space is a place you can create your own page for your profile and work. Here people can add you as a friend and you can use this as a kind of personal website. It can be set to personal or private (where people have to request to see your profile). If you are going to have a public profile then once again, remember to keep things professional.

Finally – don’t forget My Shots.com! To make the most out of this site, make sure you upload a variety of images and you can direct people to your Myshots profile to see any feedback on your work.
