If you haven't already, try shooting after the sun has put your flowers in shadow. Use a tripod and shoot with a higher aperture, like 11 or 16. The shutter may be as low as 1/4sec but that's OK. Don't push it past 1" with digital, since digital noise is HORRID (unlike film noise which is desirable).
Also try a lower angle to use DOF to select smaller groups of flowers. Even if you wish to duplicate the above photograph, the shooting time and way you do it will make a world of difference. Harsh shadows and bleak hilights are not inevitable.
The absolute best time to shoot plants is just after a rain, or on a very wet misty day. The omnidirectional light and wetness brings out color like crazy! (again, tripod)
