Weirdest bug ever

Rating: 7

Description
This little bug is only .25cm long. It jumps like mad and has a tail that is usually inside its body, but if you disturb it the tail shoots out.It comes out of it's shell like a cicada, when it changes into an adult Plant Hopper
I took the photo on my Olympus C-770 on macro setting.Photographed on a blackberry leaf.
Hope you like it.

Hi Leona, I admire your skill and technique in capturing a great macro picture of this unusual insect. I'll try and find its name. It's a magnificent close-up, and its pictures like this that help me to appreciate nature. Regards, Steve

Thanks for finding this out for me Macroman . I would not have had any idea how to even start looking for it. It's very strange isn't it. Where has the photo gone? I'm sure others would be very interested to see it too.

Dear Steve

The beautiful bug image that you have sent in is a nymph of a "true
bug". It is probably a leafhopper belonging to the Family Ricaniidae.
There are about 300 species in the family worldwide, and 29 species in
Australia. The behaviour you describe is typical for the group.

See the following web site for some images of adult Ricaniidae.

Chris
