I think you have captured why it means so much to so many.
Yes it is film grain,it was shot on Kodak Elite 100 iso color transparency film, a film that is considered to be one of the finest grained emulsions in it's class. I sometimes wonder what all the fuss is about regarding noise on digital slr's, I have to shoot at iso 800 on my 400d before I see grain/noise like this, we are spoiled these days! The original was scanned on a Minolta desktop film scanner,then converted to monochrome.

OK I digress now back to the question. The glow in the sky was indeed from the moon,if I had arrived ten minutes later I would have missed this amazing spectacle so I feel very lucky and privileged to have witnessed such an event.I have a shot with the moon in that I shall upload asap.
