Downloaded because it looked like the subject was added to a computer generated, graduated background. My hunch appears to have been to be correct. The initial capture is excellent but the selection technique needs improving if the image as presented is going to succeed.

Thank you for your critique. Do you have a suggestion for improving the selection
technique. A background of clouds? Of blue sky perhaps?

Guess what? I like the shot the way it is. Don't touch it.

Thanks, Mike. I deliberately overprocessed this image for its effect.

Hi djnoel, sorry I've been a little slow getting back to you regarding selection technique, been a little busy.If you are using photoshop try the following and make sure you are working on a duplicate layer. 1.Zoom in to at least 100% on the subject that you are trying to work on.2.To make the selection, choose the polygonal lasso and work around the skateboarder in a series of very small clicks, do not click too quickly or this could act like a double click and mess up your selection.3.When your are happy with your selection go to the Select menu and then go to seclect> modify >smooth and use a radius of around 2 pixels or so.Then go to select >feather and choose a radius of about 1 pixel. You are now ready to cut your subject away from it's surroundings and place on the your chosen background. The transition should now be a lot smoother and if done properly should appear seamless. It takes lot of practice to master this but it is worth the effort.I agree with your suggestion to try a blue sky on your image give it a go,no harm in trying. This probably sounds more difficult than actually is but you will soon get the hang of it.I think it has taken me longer to type this than it would have to carry out the procedure!
Good luck and best regards.Les aka davles.

Hi davies

Thanks for responding. Your suggestion is very helpful. Using the polygonal lasso and the modify>smooth and >feather tools would create a cleaner finished product.
(I'm using Adobe Elements 4).

I used another method that resulted in jagged lines and shapes.

Thanks again.
