Great picture, great subject. Your friend's child couldn't be cuter, with those sweet curls and big, brown eyes. I thougt this was a black and white photo until I saw that you set one of the keywords as red; then I noticed it has a very slight tone to it. What is it? Thanks, Maggie

Hi Maggie, I reduced the hue/sat level but not until it was completly black and white, then i knocked up the tenperature slightly, to give a very pale sepia, next i used the magnetic lasso over the hair with a suitable feathering setting, chose her hair colour from memory , with an opacity of about 30. I taught myself photoshop , and basically do a lot of experimenting with the program . i think this is the best way to learn- by getting out there with your camera , reading heaps of camera mags/books and looking at what other photographers are up to ( for inspiration ) .
