I went to the beach and a race broke out

Description
This image is a low-light example. I was at the races at the end of July and took many pictures at 10:30 PM. The trick to this picture and the others like it is I am still shooting at 1/250 second to stop the cars as they run around at 120 MPH in those turns. The lighting was strictly audience oriented. As you can see in the background to the left, it's pitch black out.

I was using the HI3 setting on my D200 and then cleaned it up later with Noise Ninja 2.

Anywhere there was the slightest hint of light (cars mainly) cleaned up nicely.

I am very much into auto racing and this is a nice shot. I agree that any noise did clean up very well. What does the HI3 setting equate to in ISO rating - ISO 1600, 3200? Just curious. I might have zoomed (if possible) on the cars a little more to crop out the meshing seen in the left of the frame and a lot of the black on the bottom. Tried to fill the frame more with just the automobiles.

That may not have been possible and retain your needed shutter speeds however. Enjoyed the photo.

Thanks for your comment. The ISO setting is H1.0 which is equivalent to 3200. The lens was a 18-50mm f/2.8 thru. Could have cropped it but with all the noise, it's not much of a close-up shot anyway. I like the wall in racing shots. I'm looking at another shot which I will try to clean up for your comment.

I have since 'scooped' the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR lens. Should make low light shots more forgiving.

Thanks for the information - you did not have much zooming capability then with the 18-50mm attached for this race. The lens you have picked up is almost perfect for low light action shooting - I look forward to seeing what you can do with that one for sure. An f/2.8 300mm lens is something that I would like to pick up myself over the next year for sure.
