When buying memory, what is your preference-one large card or several smaller ones?

I have a large card that I use for such things as taking video. But my fear is that if something should happen to make the card fail, and it were full of photos, I would lose a LOT. So for photos I prefer to use several 512s instead.

How do you work it?

Do you never fear losing stuff to card failure? I am not sure how common it is, I am just basing my fears on my PC experience (since that is where my academic training lies).

I have two 128MB, and two higher ones, I think about 256, but not sure. I need some sleep now, but I will check tomorrow and get back with you. I have no issues running out of room, most of the time if that is even close I will pop the SD in my laptop download real quick and then I'm ready to go again. The only reason I keep about four with my camera at a time is they use alot of space for the videos I end up taking.

I always worry about losing things. Alot of the shots I take are of nature settings that may only come around once a year - so the last thing I want to do is lost it then wait a year (by then I will have forgotten), and also pictures of my family - those are the best, I can NOT lose them.

I have 2 larger cards. (2GB and 4GB) I do not fear something happening to my card before I can get it home... minus me physically loosing them. I do consistently worry about something happening to my computer before I have wrote my pics to a disk.

A friend of mine owns a photo shop and he says he is making a lucrative business from re-claiming images from customer's larger memory cards. His advice to me prior to heading to Europe this year was to download them to my laptop on a daily basis. I did that and had no problems. I have a 512, 2 1G and a 4G card.
I always shoot the largest size possible because I can always change it once it's safely in the computer.
