Polarizer is the one i use for reducing the shadows.

A polarizing filter does not reduce shadows,it increases contrast which leads to deeper shadows. It also boosts color saturation and helps to minimize reflections.

Most people use a UV filter on their lens at all times with SLRs. it helps reduce haze from UV rays from the sun and protect the lens. Other than that not many filters are used very often apart from polarisers which davles explained.

Some times i use 2 polarizing filters to really reduce alot of light coming through to my sensor which allows me to have a very long exposure time even in the day

Oh they arent used any more because its all digital and can be changed in post production. Same way that you dont shoot in black and white any more because you can change it in photoshop.
