Does anyone know if there are any benefits or advantages to using a card reader rather than downloading straight from the camera.
If so does the type of camera matter??
I have a Digital Rebel Xti.

Downloading from a card reader should be quicker than downloading directly from the camera.Different brands of card readers and memory cards will also affect the download speed. If you are going to download your images directly from the camera you must ensure that you battery is fully charged. The only advantage of downloading from the camera is that your card does not have to removed from the camera,I have heard of some people actually bending the pins in the cameras memory slot by not taking care during the card removal procedure.I have a built in card reader on my computer and find this the most convenient method for downloading my images.I also have the DReb Xti and use Sandisk Ultra 2 cards with a 2 GB capacity and this gives me about 200 raw images which download pretty fast.

Sorry KTK the above post was from davles I guess I had another senior moment and forgot to sign in again. My memory is obviously not as efficient as the one in my camera.

Thanks for the advice davies.

The reason I ask is I thought I had heard somewhere at some point in time that using a card reader gives better quality files and that downloading straight from the camera you can lose information.

Again, thanks!

The method of download does not affect the quality of the file in any way at all. The loss of information you're concerned about occurs when the camera is set up to save the files as jpeg. The jpeg file format discards some of the information that is recorded on your cameras imaging sensor and then compresses what remains in order to keep the file size down. The camera also applies noise suppression to images shot on jpeg which also slightly degrades image quality. This happens with all digital cameras not just the xti and the only way to get maximum potential from your files is to shoot in raw mode. This is what I prefer to do because I can then process the raw data myself.Don't worry about it to much about because the output quality produced by the xti from jpeg is excellent.

some additional notes.

Make sure you get a decent reader and a current one too. There are problems with some readers and cards larger then 1GB.

Also, yes readers are MUCH faster then cameras (generally speaking).

You could always get a camera with built in WiFi and dispense with the whole 'reading' thing. hehe.

Actually, I forgot to mention, you just need to buy a Playstation III and your set. They have a built in hard drive AND are card readers too. I need a PSIII for that purpose.

sigh. If I can't convince you guys, how can I convince my wife!
