I was told last night that this SLR is the cheapest & easiest to use on the market that is under 1k. Is this correct? I am looking @ Canon's site right now, and I can compare the specs on their products, but not the price.

500USD wouldn't hurt my pockets too much, but I would rather not spend more than that right now, since I am still learning to work my PS200

Don't know about the price but it is a great camera to get you started but beware, you are talking about getting on the road to spending loads of cash once you are hooked!Happy shooting.

It's a wonderful camera that can grow with your photographic skills, that is for sure. I would probably go with the newer model, the Rebel XTi if I were buying right now. In some markets called the 400D.

dear cj

i have the rebel xti and i used the rebel xt

they are both great cameras there are two differences only

one the mega pixel one is 8 the other is 10

and the xt has 2 small lcd screens one for displaying the pics on and the other for displaying the shooting information like shutter speed and such info

i have no hard evidence but i think the photo of the xt is better but it is only a feeling

if you do not intend to buy many lenses for your xt or xti (and you need to do so if you want to use all your camera potentials)

i suggest getting the canon power shot G7 and it sells around 550 dollars

it has a lot of zoom it has a lot of mega pixels and last but not least it is a canon

and you can add an external flash to it also

and it is smaller than the xt so it will not attract a lot of attention

happy shopping and happy shooting

The Rebel XT I assume is what we call 350D is a very capable camera and is backed up by a large system but bear in mind that Canon stopped manufacture of this camera at the beginning of the year in favour of the 400D or XTi and it is a considerable upgrade over the XT I would certainly give this consideration
The G7 is a good camera but does not support RAW images which gives you a lot more control over your images.

The oldest questions - what do you want, or what your are shooting at and fore? Your question asked what can I do with the camera, I think is more logical to ask I want to do this, and what camera I need fore. I saw high class pro shooting G8 or sony 828, or using rebell. To buy it anew is a good thing, but, having a thrifty russian roots - I prefere something like Adorama (adorama.com) - you will get something checked, and in working conditions). One advice (may be some people do not like it) - buy the body without 18-55 and buy something like 28-70 or 28-105 (all of them are around $40 on ebay)

It's important to get a camera YOU LIKE. I've shot with a LOT of different gear over the years and the one truth I've found is that they all take pictures!

You want something comfortable to you that does what you want.

having said that, there are some basic things which do make certain brands of interest to certain people.

Recommended Entry Level Cameras

Pentax: Can use lenses from all of their cameras! Including the old threadmount and medium format cameras like the 6x7 and 645. The Pentax entry is a very complete and capable camera for the money. Pentax pro and USM lenses are not as plentiful as Nikon and Canon.

Nikon: Can also use older non-AF lenses but not as completely as Pentax. Older lenses will not function as fast and/or correctly. But MOST lenses can be used. Nikon Pro lenses are equal to Canon in every respect. (note; D40 will not drive anything but the new lenses since it has no direct drive for AF lenses)

Canon: Excellent gear. Stuck with modern lenses only. Pro lenses available in all shapes and sizes.

Olympus: System designed to take excellent pictures. Somewhat the underdog, but don't rule out Olympus, that camera takes INCREDIBLE shots with excellent lenses. Easily competitive with Canon and Nikon image quality!
