hello
i was thinking of upgrading from canon 400d (rebel xti) to the canon 40 d
has anyone tried both cameras?
is it worth the upgrade?
most of the times i use the kit lens in the 400 d at
18 mm is there a good lens that can do this and give good photos at the 40 d body?

Hello Azeem,
There is little difference in image quality between these two cameras but the build quality of the 40d is better because the the body has a magnesium alloy frame. It also has a faster frame rate and and a bigger rear LCD with live view.It also has a the newer Digic 3 14 bit processor and several other bells and whistles that your 400d does not have.Canon have just released an upgrade to the 400d which has a lot of the features of the 40d but has the added bonus of a 12 mega pixel sensor. The new 450d is also comes with an upgraded 18-55 kit lens that is super sharp and also has image stabilization.
Regards,Les.

I am also not sure that this upgrade worth it, the image of 40D is better then rebel, but not too much. I think it is better to invest in a good lens. and there are a lot of them - it depends how much money you want to spend. If you used it mostly on 18mm - may be to think about something like fisheye? (8mm peleng lens) or some zoom lenses beginning with 10mm - it will give you more wide options.

Im still using a 400D aswell. I started with:
400D and the 18-55mm along with a 70-300mm
then got a 50mm f/1.8 for portraits
then upgraded my 18-55 with a 24-70mm L series
then upgraded my 70-300 to a 70-200mm L series
and now im saving for either a 1D or a 5D - im still deciding.
The 400D body is fine for most things that you will need to do maybe except sports photography.
The reason i haven't already upgraded to a 40D or anything else is because of the lack of features that i need in a camera.
Just look at the differences between the 2 and think to yourself 'do i need the extra 2 frames per second?' etc
Good luck! "Time goes on, things change from moment to moment, and a photo is all that remains of the moment past..."

thanks everybody
getting the 24-70 mm lens is not an option for me not because it is bad
but because it doesn't suit my needs i photograph buildings ruins and landscapes
i need a lens that can go 18 mm at least but with the ability to go back to 55 or a bit more
i thought about buying a Nikon camera because they have the 18-135 mm lens and the 18mm-200 also but i prefer canon although they do not make such lenses
i was thinking about the Canon 17-85 mm or the sigma 17-70 or even the sigma 18-200mm
one thing i am sure about is that the kit lens is not the best and i need an alternative
so please if you know that the above lenses has better details when we see the photo at its real size please provide me with this info

Azeem,do you shoot in RAW mode or JPEG?If you have not tried RAW give it a go and you will be pleasantly surprised at the extra amount of detail you will get.As for lenses I currently use a canon 400d and the sigma 17-70 which is excellent.Check out my images on this site and you will see for your self the kind of quality that can be achieved with this camera and inexpensive lenses.

thanks davles
i am also concerned about something i read on the net about how many vertical or horizontal lines each lens has because the more they have the more clear the photo is so i was wondering if the sigma lens you have has more lines than the kit lens
i do get a lot of good photos with the kit lens and i have a website for them but i wanted a better
lens i do have the 70-300 IS also and i find it faster than kit lens although it has more aperture
i was searching for a lens that can do a lot of things in one package but could not find it
maybe i will wait for now
by the way do you have another telephoto lens you use because some of your photos
need such lens?

never heard anything good about 18-200. One question - why you need such a distance? Better change the lens. there are sigma 8mm excellent lenses, there is 8nn peleng - that is very good, there are sigma 10-18 with good reviews. Generally nikon and canon are almost equal, but canon lenses are a bit better and more carefully built (18-55 - is an exclusion). But this is just my opinion and not very strong opinion. I think I like canon more because I have it. Another opportunity to increase the quality of shots - is panorama setting with some programms as PTGui - it is easy, but because you have 6 shots in place of 1 - the quality is X3 times better. With panorama head - you have pictures very similar to original, without panorama head - you have a healthy creaziness in your ruins. What I heard about 18-200 wave and barrell distortions on the 18mm end, f5.6 on 200mm end - making AF slow and not reliable, wobbly design, but decide by yourself. It is a good idea to rent the camera and lense if they are available in a local camera shop, but I bet that 18mm with 1.6 crop factor - would not satisfy you in a building pictures with quite distinktive distoryions.

Sigma has an 18-200 also Nikon
as i said before i was searching for one lens that fits most needs but this is not made by any company because this means lost money for companys instead of buying many lenses one will buy one
i am also a fan of canon
i have shot some photos and i need to post them so that i can ask you about them but i cannot post any photo because i am not a photographer on this website so please can you send me your email(Davles or Andrey or maybe both) so that i can send you the photos

Azeem the lenses I have used are all consumer grade lenses, canon 18-55 now replaced by the sigma 17-70 for the added range at the top end and a sigma 70-300 which I have recently replaced with the new Canon 55-250 image stabilized lens.I find this an ideal combo, better than using super zooms which are slow and optically compromised. As for the lines you mention this is simply how many lines per mm a lens is capable of resolving in strictly controlled lab tests. In real world shooting situations particularly when hand holding, any superiority of the sharpest lenses is often negated due to poor technique etc.I am sorry but I will not give out my e mail address to someone I do not know personally. You have some photos on this site so why not post some of the images that appear to be concerning you so that I can take a look at them.As I asked in a previous answer, have you tried raw?in my view it is the best way to go because jpegs on the 400d are a little soft.
