A man arrested after photographing a police van outside a fish and chip shop is seeking compensation from police after they issued a written apology.

Andrew Carter, 44, protested that the officers had broken traffic rules by reversing the wrong way up a one-way street in Bristol.

'When I took a photo of them he [the officer] came running out, battered the camera from my hand on to the floor and arrested me for three crimes, none of which I'd committed,' Carter told the press.

Police declined to confirm details of the case but Carter is understood to have been arrested for assault, being drunk and disorderly and resisting arrest.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman told Amateur Photographer: 'A claim has been submitted by Mr Carter and is currently being considered. It would be inappropriate to comment further.'

The police claim they had stopped at the takeaway to view CCTV footage.

Increasing concern over police confrontations with amateur photographers was the subject of a feature article in last week's Sunday Telegraph magazine.

This should be of concern to everyone from pro photographers to people taking happy snaps. How long before you can't take a camera out at all in public? I haven't heard any horror stories in my area of the world, but still bothersome.
