I purchased the Canon Rebel xti this year and it has become my main camera. I have six lenses for it at the present. I have had my Oly E-Volt 500 for two years and only have four lenses. Not to take away from the E-Volt, but I find the canon much more fun and rewarding to shoot with.
The XTI/400D is good for anything that you care to throw at it.Don't forget that you are investing into a system when you buy an dslr, and you need to look into what else the Canon EOS system has to offer you such as lenses strobes etc.Incidentally I read somewhere that the XTI/400D is currently the NO.1 selling dslr.
I purchased the XTi 6 months ago and am very pleased with it. I only used automatic for about a month to see what it would do. I got clear sharp shots on automatic for close up, action and nights. See my "moon rising" photo for a night shot example... on automatic no less! Now I love experimenting with the settings (my waterfall photo was slow shutter speed practice). The next level up in a Canon DSLR was more than I needed. Very happy with the XTi. Good choice!
I purchased a Rebel XTI about 5 months ago, i was using an old Minolta before(film).
I am so very pleased with my camera, it takes fantastic landscape shots with a 300mm lens and wonderful shots with a macro lens. Definately a camera that i would suggest for purchase.
